James (Jim) Fourqurean is a Professor of Biology and the Director of the Marine Education and Research Center in the Institute for Water and Environment at Florida International University. He earned his MS and PhD degrees in Environmental science from the University of Virginia while studying the ecology of the seagrasses of Florida Bay. After a postdoctoral position at San Francisco State University exploring the contributions of plankton to the metabolism of Tomales Bay, he joined the Department of Biology at FIU.
Jim's research interests include ecophysiology of seagrasses, nutrient cycling in nearshore marine environments, ecosystem metabolism of vegetated marine ecosystems and carbon dynamics of coastal systems. In recent years, he has worked in the shallow coastal seas in south Florida, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Mexico, the western Mediterranean, Indonesia, and Western Australia. He has rotated on and off the FIO advisory committee a few times since 1995, and he currently is a member of the Executive Committee.
