Dr. Ian MacDonald is a Professor of Biological Oceanography at Florida State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Texas A&M University. Dr. MacDonald’s research focuses on deep-ocean extreme communities, he is also seen as an expert in satellite imagery analysis of “oil seeps” in the Gulf of Mexico. He was among the first scientists to question the size of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill by using satellite imagery to challenge the estimates given by BP and government scientists, and to stress the importance of independent scientific evidence of the spill’s significance. In Ian’s research, he uses imaging and GIS techniques to investigate the ecology of deep-sea hydrocarbon seeps.
