New FIO Marine Superintendent, Quentin Lewis

The Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) announces the appointment of Quentin Lewis Jr. as its new marine superintendent. Hosted by USF, FIO is a statewide consortium that serves as the state of Florida’s hub of oceanographic research and coastal stewardship and as an education and research resource for schools across the State University System (SUS).

“FIO is incredibly excited to introduce Quentin Lewis as superintendent. The heart of our at-sea support mission is our vessels, their outstanding crews, and a data-centered approach to the services we provide the SUS of Florida. Quentin’s invaluable experience, reputation, and credibility working with the nation’s academic research fleet will be a great addition to FIO’s aspirations and operations,” said Dr. Monty Graham, Director of FIO.

Lewis was recruited from the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences where he served as Marine Superintendent of the Marine Operations Department, operating the R/V Atlantic Explorer. He earned his bachelor’s degree in maritime transportation from the United States Merchant Marine Academy and has a US Coast Guard Master’s License.

The marine superintendent is responsible for the operation of FIO’s two research vessels, the R/V Weatherbird II and the R/V Hogarth. The research vessels spend an average of 200 days at sea, mostly in the Gulf of Mexico, to achieve the research and educational goals of its users. FIO’s vessels have taken over 10,000 students to sea.

“I’m looking forward to helping FIO expand its vessel operations, in terms of both personnel and science missions. The completion of successful science operations only happens when the vessel’s crews and the staff are happy and willing to give 110%. My job will be to make sure that happens, and I will do everything I can to support the most important part of any research vessel operation – its people,” said Lewis.

Quentin Lewis begins his position as Marine Superintendent of FIO on February 1, 2022 after finishing his commitments with the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences.
