In April 2010, BP pledged $500 million for scientific research to assess and monitor the health and response of the Gulf of Mexico over the ten years following the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. The Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) received a block grant of $10 million in the first year. This rapid-release award was used to fund 27 projects identified from a peer-review proposal process.
In total, these projects involved 91 investigators and over 45 students and 15 post-doctoral research associates from over 30 institutions. These funds are part of the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) Year 1 funds. Here are the FIO Block Award – GoMRI Year 1 Reports from the 27 funded projects.
