Research Vessels

R/V W. T. Hogarth

Launched in 2017, FIO’s state-of-the-art R/V Hogarth is a highly capable and versatile 78-foot vessel equipped with berths for 10 scientists, wet & dry labs on board, a Satellite Internet Link, Fisheries Eco-Sounders, Dual Head Swath Bathymetry (for bottom-mapping), a multi-panel video wall for live visualization, and a Dynamic Positioning System. The vessel is capable of voyaging throughout the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and parts of the Atlantic.

 

R/V Weatherbird II

The Research Vessel (R/V) Weatherbird II is the flagship of the FIO fleet. The 115-foot, 194-ton vessel has Berthing for a Crew of 7 and a Science Party of 13 and can accommodate more for educational day cruises. With 780 square feet of working deck space and 200 square foot of wet laboratory space, the vessel is capable of voyaging throughout the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and parts of the Atlantic.

R/V Western Flyer

Launched as part of FIO’s Fleet in 2023, this custom-designed sailing classroom is an impressive platform that features wet and dry labs, a 15 x 18-foot moon pool and control room for ROV operations, and berthing for 16 science party personnel. The 117-foot SWATH vessel is an extremely stable platform equipped with high speed internet/data, a chilled seawater system, walk-in cold and isolated dark rooms, an A-frame, dynamic positioning system and more. The vessel is capable of voyaging throughout the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and the Atlantic.
